I have been working on learning how to animate the old fashioned way. Don Bluth has a website and is mentoring those of us who love the art form and are anxious to learn the nuts and bolts. The Cyber Garage Project is a virtual classroom packed into a 3 minute cartoon short written and directed by Don.
I am working on scene 32. Here is my latest work.

Hi John,
You're a great example showing how one can pursue lots of different things (animation, teaching caricature class, DCP pickup band {or whatever we're called}, your day job, as well as being a husband/dad, and that's just what I know of) and still find time to eat and sleep. Sometimes the day job alone wipes me out and it's hard to muster up energy for other pursuits. Thanks for the inspiration!
Mesmerizingly smooth! I wish I could get that feel in my animation class.
Hi Dan,
Thank you! I try but, often feel disappointed by being unable to produce more. I've been wanting to do a short film for years. I have some ideas etc but, never quite get to it. I'm happy to be finally learning some of the basics and hope to apply to a personal project soon.
As for the band, I marvel at the musicianship of the guys and feel totally outclassed and a drag on everyone else. I think "I should practice more" but, then I realize I'd rather paint or draw.
Solecito!
Thank you. The older I get and the more comfortable I am with drawing the "easier" this gets. It's not easy but, I find I can concentrate on the technical side of the animation because I don't have to worry so much about the drawing.
Very nice work, John. Very nice.
Thank you Patrick.
you are a natural John. How are you shooting your animation, and what program are you using?
...I need to get back into this game!
Thanks Jeff! I'm using Digicel Flipbook. It's a great program. Very easy to use. Set up a peg bar on my scanner and just scan the drawings into the scene.
It's pretty flexible as well. I do my first pass and after scanning in, I can see where I have the timing right or wrong and adjust the spacing of the drawings to help me figure out the number of inbetweens.
Bravo! :)
Wow. Is there anything you can't do?
How long did this take you?
Kimmie
